Update on Teofimo Lopez Testing Positive for Covid-19

Now that the world appears to be returning to something resembling normal, the boxing industry is striking while the iron is hot with several big cards on the same night, that night being June 19th. In my opinion, the biggest of the shows was Triller card with Teofimo Lopez vs George Kambosos Jr.

Earlier this week on Tuesday the boxing world got terrible news that Teofimo Lopez tested positive for the Covid-19 virus and issymptomatic. To make matters worse, Teofimo’s wife has also contracted the virus and is three months pregnant.

According to Triller founder Ryan Kavanaugh, Teofimo currently has a 102° fever with 90% oxygen and he’s having trouble breathing. Allegedly Teofimo couldn’t shadowbox for 45 seconds before collapsing. Given that fact that Lopez has asythma, nobody is sure if he can recover in four weeks or forty weeks. I think I speak for everyone in the boxing industry that we’re all worried for the future of Teofimo Lopez.

As of right now the plan is to reschedule the fight for August 14th and there really isn’t any wiggle room there. The week before is UFC 265 and the week after the 14th is Pacquiao vs Spence.  Kambosos is expecting a baby as well at the end of September and there’s a 14-day quarantine going into Australia.

It’s crystal clear that the future of this fight is skating on thin ice. If that date of August 14th can’t be met, the next date would be October 2nd and with Teofimo’s health being uncertain and the Lopez family expecing a child in November, the chances of Lopez vs Kambosos happening is looking slim to none.
